Read More »The plan was simple: head straight up from the top of Sand Canyon Road to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain, elevation 9952′. A bit over 3 miles as the crow flies, and 3000′ of climbing. While it was April and there was some snow remaining in the Big Bear Valley, we didn’t know the exact conditions we would encounter as we ascended. The summit certainly looked snowy, but whether we would encounter hard ice, soft snow, or significant bare patches was unknown. So we came prepared for all three.

Once impassable just a few months ago, the Seven Oaks Trail continues to emerge from hiding. The Big Bear Valley Trail Foundation’s Seven Oaks Trail Rehabilitation Project, with support from the US Forest Service, continues to make progress and is almost passable from top to bottom. While substantial trail corridor and tread work remain, the ability to traverse the trail without swimming through White (or Buck) Thorn and crawling over fallen trees is significant. This journey has been a long and nail-biting one already and it is only early December. The Big Bear Lake Events Office started working on this project Spring of 2009 to make this happen.
