Three Elements of Sustainable Trails

There are three essential elements for creating good sustainable trails. Good trails that withstand use and weather. Good trails that are easy and pleasant to use. Good trails that minimize maintenance and fight off the greatest trail evil – erosion:

Outslope – A trail’s tread should always be slightly higher on the uphill side so that water can easily drain off. A gentle outslope of at least 2%, preferably 5%, is recommended. Pebble Plain Cleaned – Moonloaf Dump Removed

Over 150 volunteers from a variety of organizations spent the morning cleaning up decades of dumped trash on US Forest Service Pebble Plain land West of Sugarloaf on August 28, 2010. It’s amazing what a motivated group of people can do on a Saturday morning. Forty tons of trash, including 6 cars, 2 boats, 1 motorhome, and countless couches were removed from the San Bernardino National Forest land, sometimes referred to as “Moonloaf.” For decades this area had been used as an illegal dumping ground.

Big Bear Community Bike Rides

On Saturday, May 1, over 40 local Big Bear cyclists braved 40 degree weather to participate in the first Community Bike Ride. Riders ranged from 7 to 74 years old and enjoyed a slow and easy course along the Eagle Point bicycle route in the City of Big Bear Lake. Even the City’s Mayor, Liz Harris, joined in the fun.
Two more rides are scheduled for the following Saturdays on May 8th and May 15. Riders of ALL levels are encouraged to participate. Rides begin at 10am at the Snow Summit …

Big Bear Announced Host City for Amgen Tour of California

On October 22 it was officially announce that Big Bear Lake would be a finish stage for the Tour of California. The Amgen Tour of California is eight days long, May 16-23, 2010, and covers over 750 miles of gorgeous terrain throughout the state. On May 21, 2010 the sixth stage starts in Pasadena all the way to Big Bear Lake. After riding 50 plus miles the riders then start their near 10,000 feet climb up into beautiful Big Bear.
