9am, moderate to difficult, 6-mile loop hike, 1200-foot elevation gain. Includes a short hill scramble through open terrain. Bring water, sturdy boots, snacks and clothing appropriate to the weather. Newcomers Hike at the Discovery Center — Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation, Sierra Club – Big Bear Group, San Bernardino National Forest Association
This hike sponsored by Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation in partnership with the San Bernardino National Forest Association and the Big Bear Group of the Sierra Club will be of approximately 1 to 2 hour duration and is intended to introduce newcomers and beginners to the hiking possibilities in San Bernardino National Forest. It is suitable for families with children that have the ability to walk 2 to 4 miles. The exact destination and distance will depend on the ability level and interest of those that show up and will be decided by the leader the day of the hike. Time?, strenuous, 7.5 miles, 1,400 feet elevation gain. This is a “Peaks” of Big Bear hike. Those achieving all five peaks overlooking the Big Bear Valley will be given a commemorative patch. Hikers are to meet at Cougar Crest Trail Head located 100 yards west of the Big Bear Discovery Center. An Adventure Pass is required for parking. Poopout Hill and beyond, Jenks Lake area – MTHC
8:30am, moderate, 4.5 miles, 900 feet elevation gain. South Fork Trail off Jenks Lake Road to Poopout Hill and back. Great views. Turn around point is Poopout Hill lookout with a spectacular view of the north slope of San Gorgonio and a forest service exhibit of the history of this area. For those wanting a longer hike continue on Slushy Meadows with Dick Banks approx. 8 miles round trip. Bring water, snacks, lunch, hiking boots, sunscreen. Grandview Point Loop – Sierra Club – Big Bear Group
9am, moderate, 7 miles. We will access Grandview Point via a moderate 7-mile loop route that includes Pine Knot Trail, 2N10, Lost Trail and 2N08. If our timing is right, we should see a wide array of wildflowers along the way, including Lemon Lilies, Corn Lilies, Fire Weed and Giant Lupines. Bring water, snacks, sturdy boots and clothing appropriate to the weather. We will meet in the east parking lot of the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center and carpool to the trailhead from there. 9am, moderate, 4 miles, 500 ft. elevation gain. The hike is mostly on flat 2N27 then climbing up to Manzanita Meadow and the down Bow Canyon. MTHC Annual Picnic, Potluck and Hike
8:30am, Aspen Glen Picnic area – Big Bear Lake. All levels of hiking. The club will provide drinks and fried chicken so bring a salad or dessert to share. And a folding chair and cooler if needed. We will meet at the Aspen Glen Picnic area on Mill Creek Road on the south side of Big Bear Lake at 8:30am. Then we will split into 3 different hiking groups. Easy hike with Bill off 2N10, some off-trail, some forest service road and some regular trail, passing a meadow and stopping at a spring-fed, yellow-post camp site. The pace will be casual. Moderate hike with Janet on the Pine Knot Loop , 4 miles, 500 ft. elevation gain, starting at the Aspen Glen Picnic area meanders thru stands of white fir and Jeffrey pine providing good views of Big Bear Lake. We will connect to the Pine Knot trail for the return loop. Moderate/difficult hike with Ed C. to Grandview Point Lookout. 7 miles, approx. 1,000 feet elevation gain. Starting from the picnic area we will climb thru lovely wooded trails and meadows to an overlook above Redlands. Bring water, layered clothing, sunscreen, hat, insect repellant, and good hiking boots. National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking.
